Alliance Compensation is a team of seasoned experts with skill and creativity providing hands-on counsel and advice and can advance your agenda, whether taking new ground or just maintaining pace. We’re not a temporary fix, we’re a trusted solution. We also have the technical knowledge and breadth of understanding that comes with nearly 100 years of combined experience that can look past symptoms and get to the root cause and permanent solution for any compensation or rewards initiative or project.

We have extensive experience in designing, developing and implementing comprehensive solutions for job classification and evaluation, market pricing, executive compensation, sales incentives and broad-based short and long-term incentives. David Adent

David Adent has 30+ years of compensation experience, and more than 7 years’ experience in Information Services. His experience includes 20+ years in high tech and 13 years in the utility industry. During his career he advised senior executives, C-Suite executives, the CEO and the Compensation Committee. He also has managed most compensation functions in a Fortune 100 company including market competitiveness, compensation consulting, compensation planning & administration, and executive compensation.

David is known for his consulting and technical expertise, ability to analyze and model complex problems, and building relationships with key partners. During his career, he also led numerous cross-functional teams delivering innovation compensation solutions including job classification frameworks and pay systems, short and long-term incentive plans, new compensation planning & administration systems, and updated equity plans. Immediately prior to Alliance Compensation, David led Cisco’s executive compensation function which included advising the Chief People Officer in the hiring of executive officers, overseeing the preparation / production / delivery of Compensation Committee materials, overseeing the creation of Cisco’s CD&A, responding to proxy advisor evaluations, preparing Compensation Committee members for meetings, and overseeing the design and management of Cisco’s equity plans.

David is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and has an advanced certification in employment law. He also has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Information Systems. He is the Practice Leader for Executive Compensation | Alliance Compensation, Pay Policy | Compliance |, Compensation Committee /Board Comp and Short-Term and Long-Term Incentives.

In his free time, David enjoys spending time with family (especially his grandchildren), visiting national parks, fishing and boating on the lake.

Nancy Ellington

Managing Partner

Nancy Ellington

Nancy Ellington has 25+ years of compensation experience, and more than 10 years’ experience in Finance. She understands the significant financial impact that compensation programs have on the business. She spent most of her career in the corporate world, working in-house at various companies in high-tech, life sciences, private equity and aerospace industries. However, Nancy has always had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. In 2016, she left the corporate world behind and launched Compass Total Rewards – a compensation consulting firm. In 2020, she merged her firm with Columbia Compensation to form Alliance Compensation. Today, Nancy’s experience includes both public and private sectors in a mix of small, mid-sized, and Fortune 100 companies. She knows the entire process from end-to-end, setting herself apart from many other consultants.

Nancy has developed a number of innovative approaches to compensation including market-leading remuneration strategies, forward-looking compensation summaries, and proactive engagement/retention plans. She’s also delivered presentations to all levels of management including C-Suite Executives and the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors. Additionally, she holds certifications from WorldatWork that include: Certified Executive Compensation Professional (CECP), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), and Global Remuneration Professional (GRP). Nancy has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting.

She is the Practice Leader for Alliance for Job Architecture, Market Analysis, and Salary Structure | Pay Grades | Pay Ranges.

Nancy is married, has two adult children, and lives in Redmond, WA. Additionally, in her free time, she enjoys hiking, wine tasting, traveling, and scuba diving.

Jim Harvey

Managing Partner

Jim Harvey

Jim Harvey had operated his own compensation consulting business for 7 years prior to co-founding Alliance Compensation. He has over 40 years’ experience in the field, encompassing not just consulting but experience in corporate roles as well. His experience includes high-tech, aerospace, utility and health care where he specialized in leading Total Rewards functions. Additionally, his global work experience includes creating custom pay strategies, and understanding how pay is managed in other countries. He has a strong track record of driving large-scale projects through to delivery and implementation. 

Jim began his career in Arizona, and had an opportunity to move and work for a large compensation consulting firm. But he met his first wife so married and stayed in Phoenix. The family moved to Oregon in 1997.

Prior to co-founding Alliance Compensation, he was an instructor for WorldatWork, teaching job evaluation, sales incentives and base pay / pay for performance. Jim is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and Global Remuneration Professional (GRP). He is the Practice Leader for Pay Equity and Sales Compensation Pay Equity Analysis, Sales Compensation and Incentives).

Believe it or not sometimes it doesn’t rain in Oregon. Jim especially enjoys outdoors activities such as camping, golfing, pickleball and gardening. He lives within a few miles drive of several wineries and enjoys sampling Oregon Pinot Noir.

He’s still married to his first wife (see above!) and has three grandchildren (soon to be four) that are teaching him to be their Boppa.

Josh Adent

Josh Adent

Associate Consultant

Josh Adent

Josh comes to Alliance Compensation with focused experience in finance and accounting.  He worked his way up to the level of Senior Accountant within small and medium-sized businesses following achievement of his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Oregon. His experience has spanned various industries including hospitality, live entertainment, manufacturing, non-profit, and SaaS.   

Prior to joining Alliance Compensation, Josh became familiar with consulting and project-based work as he completed key projects such as multi-year reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and the creation of production labor reports.   In this consulting role, he honed his analysis, communication and software skills. 

Josh continues to cheer for his alma mater in their athletic endeavors – particularly football. He has also completed graduate level studies in Bible and Theology and uses this expertise as a volunteer and guest preacher. 

Personal

In addition to these interests, Josh’s hobbies include guitar, golf, and spending time with his wife and young son.

Erins Jones

Erin Jones

Compensation Consultant

Erin Jones

Erin has 10+ years of compensation experience across several industries including manufacturing, retail, and technology. With compensation experience at a Fortune 100 company, as well as mid-sized private and public companies, she is ready to tackle challenges related to market pricing and rewards programs.

Erin’s strengths are data analysis, reporting, as well as understanding and implementing systems and software. While Excel is her go-to software for compensation projects, she has also been involved in the technical side of Oracle’s compensation planning tool, Workday compensation and time and attendance, and market pricing and rewards planning software.

She has also implemented new salary band structures as well as combining salary bands after reorganizations and acquisitions.

Erin is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and also has a specialized certification for Sales and Commission compensation plans (CSCP). Erin has a master’s degree in HR Management and a BS degree in Psychology, with a minor in business.

In her free time, Erin enjoys spending time with her 2 daughters and husband, traveling and especially being at the beach.

Alvin Kwong

Alvin Kwong

Compensation Consultant

Alvin Kwong

Alvin has 15 years of Compensation experience working in various compensation roles, supporting compensation systems, annual compensation cycles and compensation interfaces. He has also project managed small to medium compensation projects, program managed supplemental pay programs (on-call pay, shift differentials, etc.) and performed core compensation fundamentals like market analyses, salary range reviews and updates, and supported general compensation questions. 

During this time, he has worked with Oracle HRIS and Workday Compensation and Workday Compensation business processes. Excel is the favorite tool of choice for any analysis, audits, or efforts. 

Personal

Alvin enjoys traveling and vacationing with his family. He has been to Bahamas, Canada, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Maldives, Mexico, Poland, and Singapore. Closer to home, he enjoys biking, gardening, and especially spending time with his family.

Lisa Thormodsgard

Lisa has 25+ years of experience in the design, analysis and implementation of Compensation & Total Rewards programs and technology solutions, primarily in Corporate roles in the high-tech sector.  She has a passion for the use of market intelligence in base pay and equity design, as well as M&A due diligence, integration, and business process optimization.  Additionally, she has led compensation programs and project management, operations, compliance, and systems design.

She is recognized for teamwork, problem solving and delivering high quality, value-add results/experiences. Having been responsible for many Corporate Compensation budgets over the years, she is keenly aware of balancing the tension between attracting and retaining talent through compensation program design, while also managing the impact on operating expenses. 

Lisa has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources from Marquette University.  In her free time, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and additionally is a passionate advocate in the foster care community.

Sherry Tran

Sherry Tran 

Sherry has 16+ years of compensation experience, primarily in the financial services industry. She also has experience in high tech and higher education.

Overall she is known for being a team player, who is ready and able to take on new challenges. Her adaptability and willingness to learn has given her the ability to gain knowledge and expertise in several areas of compensation including annual pay planning, system implementation, market pricing, pay structure design, and short/long term incentive plan design and administration. She has also supported all levels of management from first line managers to C-suite executives.

Sherry has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in International Business from the University of San Francisco. She is also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma international honor society.

In her free time, Sherry enjoys spending time outdoors with her family – especially hiking, cycling, participating in running and/or obstacle course races.

Monica Velez

Prior to joining Alliance Compensation, Monica had the opportunity to experience multiple roles and responsibilities across the Total Rewards team for Cisco Systems for 22+ years. While with Cisco she formed and led a global team of Compensation Consultants and Analysts to provide scalable and expert compensation consulting services.

Monica has a broad range of experience across human resources and is well respected for her knowledge and interpersonal skills. Her experience ranges from working for a small start-up to a Fortune 100 company.

She understands the financial impact that compensation programs have on attracting and retaining talent, as well as modeling and managing operating expenses. She has supported business leaders at all levels of the organization and across all functions.

Monica has provided expertise in compensation consulting, program and project management, operations, HRIS, SOX compliance, compensations systems design and mergers and acquisitions. She also has experience in multiple compensation spaces including corporate and sales compensation, market intelligence, base pay design, equity strategy & design and client-facing consulting.
