Pay Policies

Pay Policies

pay policy
Sun shines over the wooden wheel held by man

Pay policies such as promotional guidelines, new hire salaries, and salary increase guidelines must be aligned with your business objectives, pay philosophies, systems, and processes to be successful.

Companies have pay policies because:

  • Their pay philosophy and strategies express value of equitable treatment in compensating employees
  • Employees need to understand how pay programs are supposed to work
  • Managers need periodic guidance and direction to make pay decisions within a common framework
  • It can be difficult to administer pay when there are not guidelines and “lines in the sand”
  • Some states are advancing regulations on pay transparency, which affects pay policies and management actions

Our experience creating pay policies includes:

  • Working directly with managers and executives on crafting policies that guide but don’t restrict
  • Steering companies to embrace policies that bring about changes that align with their philosophies and strategies about paying employees
  • Helping companies and their managers understand the difference between a policy and a process or procedure
  • Determining how employee pay would change under conditions such as company-initiated vs. employee-initiated moves
  • Researching and aligning competitive pay with geographic tiers that are competitive for cost-of-labor
  • Training managers on the difference between a policy and a framework that enables decision-making
